40. Banteay Chhmar Temple
Banteay Chhmar temple is an historical site located in the Tmar Puok district along National road 69A, about 59km north of the provincial town. The temple was built in the 12th and 13th century, during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. However, years of war have laid waste to the temple, and thieves and villagers have removed the statues and sculpture for sale. Most of which have ended up in Thailand.
There are other temples in the Banteay Meanchey province besides the Banteay Chhmar temple. This includes the Banteay Toap, Preah Chhor, and Pram temples. Unfortunately, these temples have not been conserved. Today the Banteay Chhmar temple is an important site in Banteay Meanchey province and is a highlight of international tourism.
